Insight: Tax Withholding / Governor's Race / Book Translation / Documentary (November 3, 2009)

Tax Withholding - If you live in California, don't be surprised if you find your next paycheck a little smaller than before. It's because of a tax change that's meant to help the state and was one of the compromises California's legislature agreed on to balance the budget. What is the change, how does it work and how will it affect you? Today on Insight, we'll get the answers to those questions from a public information officer for the Franchise Tax Board.

Governor's Race - One year from today, California voters will elect their next Governor. Three Republicans are running: Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, former EBay CEO Meg Whitman, and former Congressman Tom Campbell. But no Democrat is officially in the race. Late last week, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom withdrew, and while former Governor and current Attorney General Jerry Brown is expected to run, but isn't yet in the race. At least, not officially. Capital Public Radio's Capitol Bureau Chief Marianne Russ talks with Sherry Bebitch Jeffe of USC's School of Policy, Planning and Development about it.

Textbook Translation - When a blind school student needs a text book, it might have to be translated into Braille. How does that work, given the relatively small demand for some Braille textbooks? A local company specializes in translating textbooks and you'll hear how it's done.

"River of Renewal" - The Klamath is a huge river in Southern Oregon and Northern California that used to team with salmon, but no more. A film about the struggle over the river's future gets its California public TV premiere this week. "River of Renewal" was produced by a member of a Klamath-area tribe. Jack Kohler also teaches film making on Indian reservations. You'll meet him and hear about his film.
