The 1875 Iowa State Census, sometimes called the "Thirteenth State Census" is not well-known -- even in professional state history circles. I became familiar with this census when I first laid eyes on it at the Carroll County Courthouse in Carroll, Iowa. The enumerator asked 150 separate questions, his efforts creating a 7-page history for each and every Iowa family residing in the state in 1875. Attached is one set of the 7-page genealogical goldmine, along with the 150 questions that were asked. Surely, there are more of these records to be found resting leisurely on bottom shelves or collecting dust in courthouse basements amid this great state. The hunt is on!
