After some intriguing conversations with Thomas Park (aka Mystified) about fractal and generative music, I decided the time was right for me to try composing a fractal piece of my own. I had decided that the ocean floor would be the theme I would work with. That inspiration came from DJ Mitch, whose Deeply Deep netlabel had released some music and video of mine, and had as its motto, "exploring the ocean floor of music". This release was originally intended for him, but I have decided to release it on my own label.
I began by using one fractal program, Paul Whalley's "poodles and flan", to create the textures that would depict the ocean floor itself, and then began to create "digital fish" to fill the ocean with. To appreciate the sense of motion inherent in fish, headphones are recommended for listening and enjoying the panning effects.
The bubbly synthetic textures on this release are lighter and more uplifting in nature than the darker sounds which have been the standard lately for this label. Yet there are hints of the serendipitous nature of free-jazz in the arrangement of the sounds, and a beautiful disintegration in rhythm towards the middle of the piece.
This material was recorded in July 2006, and was the first piece that gained local recognition among those who were not accustomed to this style of music.
Should anyone feel inspired to remix this piece, I still have the parts! You can email if interested... jon7even@hotmail.com
