Interview with Jacob Heilbrunn, author of 'They Knew they were Right, The Rise of the Neocons'
Jacob Heilbrunn is senior editor at 'The National Interest', a publication of the Nixon Center. He describes himself as a 'former neocon', though any sympathies he may have had with members of this movement appear to have fallen by the wayside. Over the next two programs Jacob Heilbrunn provides his views on the foreign policies of neocons and the campaign of John McCain, who has hired many of the same neocons who helped promote the Iraq War policies of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.
This is the second program within our series on the battle for reality going on in the 2008 Presidential campaign as would be leaders prepare their arguments for the general election. We are looking at the foreign policies of Republican John McCain first then we will discuss the other Republicans, Democrats, independents, Greens, and others. Anti corporate corruption crusader Ralph Nader has also announced his candidacy and we will be looking at the Indepenent Nader and Green Candidates like Cynthia Mckinney too.
An intro includes clips of John McCain speaking before the RNC in 2004 as he made a rousing pro Iraq War and pro War on Terror speech. We discuss such policies as they relate to McCain's present support from neocons or neocon supporters like former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton and Commentary Magazine and former Rudy Giuliani advisor Norman Podhoretz. He is now supporting McCain on foreign policy. We hear Bolton call for Israel to go it alone in attacking Iran and Podhoretz saying Bush may still attack Iran before leaving office.
We also hear a clip of Mccain's energy and defense policy advisor former CIA Director James Woolsey. During an interview in Israel a reporter asks him if the American people will support what McCain advises, the "opening of a second front" in the war, this time against Iran. Woolsey says this may be necessary.
We also listen to McCain spin his ealier Iraq War comments in New Hampshire:
While campaigning in Ohio Mccain said: 'By the way that reminds me of this hundred year thing. My friends the war will be over soon. The war, for all intents and purposes, although the insurgency will go on for years and years and years but it will be handled by the Iraqis not by us.'
Next week Jacob Heilbrunn looks further at McCain, the Neocons, and US foreign and military policy. And Iraq War veteran Brandon Friedman of votevets.org discusses the information on his web site about McCain and his policies on Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran.
