Opening keynote for Evergreen International Conference 2009, the first user conference for Evergreen open source library software. Joe Lucia, director of the library at Villanova University, describes a path forward for open source in libraries and exhorts his peers in academia to be bold, take risks, and avoid being "sheeple." Lucia, a poet, musician, and librarian, quoted from and discussed Walt Whitman's poem, "Song of the Open Road," using this poem to discuss the nature of "open":

Afoot and light-hearted, I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me, leading wherever I choose.

Henceforth I ask not good-fortune—I myself am good fortune;
Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing, 5
Strong and content, I travel the open road.
