memento mori (2001) by composer and media artist
Joey Bargsten is a vocal work for six voice parts and electronic sound file. The text consists of a chanting of the names of each victim; each name on a single pitch, each pitch at a separate tempo. As the pitches rise, the tempi increase, and an arch of gradually expanding then contracting harmonies is created over the length of the piece. Vocalists find their pitches and tempi by listening to individual click/pitch tracks played on portable CD or mp3 players over headphones.
The work began its life as a live performance accompaniment to an art exhibit called
Articles of Space, curated by Leon Johnson and held at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, OR (April, 2001).
