Its bad. The humour is dated, but wasn't great in 2008 either. The game is already funny, and adding lazy jokes over the top is mostly exhausting.
Some parts are truly embarrassing and hard to look back on. The music club scenario (Video 2, Yuria "GuavaMoment" Satake) is replaced by a transphobic scenario about questioning one of the music clubs members gender, but... she's a woman. She's clearly a woman. She's a bit handsome, but not in an androgynous way. She has long hair and wears a skirt. The joke about her gender being ambiguous is flat. They refer to the bald teacher in the scenario as "Mr. Garrison" - a transphobic caricature from South Park. The scenario ends on the joke that she's a genderless robot because I guess that's the attempt at a punchline? Look, its just a hard watch and an unfunny bit.
Making fat jokes about the sumo wrestler, homophobic jokes in the barbershop level, or just a couple of jokes about dwarfism, there's a lot which has aged like milk. We're still referring to the language of Japanese as Moonspeak here.
Even if you aren't a Woke SJW PC thugs (of which I am all three), the jokes aren't good. They ARE bad because they're offensive for no reason, but the inoffensive jokes are often duds as well. I want to go out of my way to mention the offensive aspects in specific here as a content warning to future viewers.
But sometimes the bit is good. Making the Blue, American-coded Ouendan British is a fun localisation and ok bit, and using Times New Roman to communicate their personalities is a simple pleasure. The cow themed villain in the Jin2 (Music Hour) level speaking entirely in cow puns is great. The prelude to the final level, where thread posters are cheering the Ouendan back to life is genuinely sweet. There are moments when the LPer knows to stop making jokes and have a Moment, and I respect the occasional restraint.
There's a lot of game knowledge in here. Its a consolidation of all the fan knowledge in the anglosphere of the time. Unfortunately for the lets play, its all stuff you can read on Wikipedia nowadays, but still putting it in this digestible of a form in 2008 was cool.
The gameplay on display is genuinely great, the player is highly skilled. It is a cam recording. DS capture was difficult at the time, and the LPer wanted a controller cam. Worth it for those skills.
So what do I think on the whole? Nostalgia isn't all its cracked up to be. These videos are dated, unfunny, and flawed low resolution cam recordings. But the love the Let's Player has for this game is obvious and still appealing. I can't love these videos as much as I did in 2008. But I can give this five stars for love and government.
tldr This Lets Play sucks, but with a heart emoticon
