Notes
This recording dates from March 1995, not long after Zak Sally joined the band, during the band's West Coast tour. At this particular show, I think they were opening for Spectrum.
This was one of the first Low tapes I ever acquired. It's been circulating for a long time, but I have no information on who recorded it or what equipment they used. It's a so-so recording, muffled and distant with some bass distortion and audience noise, but still listenable.
The tape begins with the very last chord of Violence; I don't know if that was the first song, or other songs are missing too. The levels are very low at first, but improve a few seconds into Below & Above. There's a small dropout at about 3:40 in Words, but all other songs are intact.
The setlist is made up of material from the first three releases, and includes a rare performance of Jack Smith which stops abruptly after the end of the lyrics -- maybe the band hadn't worked out the instrumental outro yet.
The band has said that they used to get a lot of drug-related comments on their early tours, and you can hear a couple wisecracks near the microphone:
"This music totally makes me wish I was on heavier drugs."
"This kind of music's good for codeine and beer."
Still, the audience is warm and appreciative, and I thank the unknown taper for documenting this early show.
