Percussionist William Winant was born in Los Angeles to a family of accomplished actors and musicians. He studied at Los Angeles City College and Cal Arts before doing advanced studies at York University in Toronto in 1979. He returned to the West Coast to study with composer Lou Harrison at Mills College in Oakland and has performed with the Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio.
