Single-segment speed run of Super Mario 64, done on November 6 2004. Utilizes several glitches through doors to finish the game with only 16 stars, far short of the intended minimum of 70. Available in low and normal quality, normal is slightly stretched to 352x240 though.
Author's comments: This run was done with the 16 star glitch. Dom Dunc discovered these series of glitches (I did not know this, although the last record holder said this). This run took me a while to get to this good of a time. It took me about 2 weeks of playing the game 1-3 times a day each day. When I had first found out about this site, I saw this video, and instantly thought that I should try and get the record for this run, seeing that I was conveniently in the middle of playing Mario 64 anyway.
I had mainly learned how to do the glitches used in this run by watching this video, but my run isn't just a copy of the previous record. I did do different levels and stars than the previous record holder. One thing that helped I believe is that I got the star from the Red Flying Cap course, which then later helped me get the star "Red Hot Log Rolling" in Lethal Lava Land very fast. Also I only did one star in the first level only because your forced to get one star from there, and I believe almost all the other stars in that level are too time consuming.
There were a couple of times I messed up in this run, which leaves big possibility for getting a better time in the future.
1) The Red Flying Cap Course: Wow I screwed up bad. I missed the 8th coin, so I had to turn around and get it. What happened then? I missed it for a second time somehow! Although I was able to get it for a third try and have enough flying power to make it back to the platform in time.
2) The Last Bowser Level (I think it's Bowser In The Sky): Coming up to the first set of rotating platforms, I screw up horribly. At this point in the game im going crazy because it's the best I've done, and it was very possible for me to get the record. I go to try and do the side jump thing, but I mess up and end up doing a normal jump. So I try again, and miss again. And again... and again... Finally I calmed down, stopped and did the jump good and continued.
3) The first glitch, getting the rabbit through the door: I've done this glitch plenty of times on first try, but this time it took 5 tries. I actually had it the third try, but the camera was in a weird position and didn't realize till later, good thing I did all the other glitches perfectly.
So overall with the levels I chose, and the order of the levels, along with not messing up a single time on any Bowser, I achieved the record and encourage all of you to watch it and even go for your own speed runs!
