Fiddle - Adam McConnell, piccolo - John McNulty, piano - Jos. Dolan, Victor 19446. Three very spirited reels. The second tune is more well known as the Fermoy Lassies. The piccolo was a fairly common instrument on these old discs of Irish music; the tin whistle also sometimes heard, but it had nothing like the ubiquity it enjoys now, when piccolos are almost never played, probably owing to their scarcity - few flutemakers make them now, and antiques are hard to come by and often of crude manufacture. These musicians were joined by Thomas Maloney on the pipes for another disc, and a set of polkas from that record were reissued on the Topic CD Irish Dance Music. Curiously enough these were very gently played, in contrast to this fiery recording.
