Phil RosenMeeting at Midnight (1944)

Also known as Black Magic

From IMDb: Because Charlie Chan plans to return to Honolulu, he no longer needs the services of Birmingham, who gets a job as butler for William and Justine Bonner, two apparently phony psychics, who regularly host occult activities in their home. When Charlie's pretty daughter Frances attends a seance out of curiosity, Mr. Bonner is shot, and she becomes an immediate suspect. Charlie postpones his trip home to help with the investigation, which is made problematic when no bullet can be found in the wound and a hypnotized Mrs. Bonner is compelled to commit suicide by jumping off the roof of a downtown building.

Subject: 'Black Magic' not so black
This film still has innocent enjoyment for me. The sound and film integrity remain after so many years. Audiences were able to see murder and intrigue without having to get the faces rubbed in it, unlike modern film makers who have no imagination.

Subject: Best Chan film of them all
The decision to have fun with this film is evident from the start- it is the only original film from the series that laughs at itself. The cast can be seen creacking up in many of the scenes, and everyone is made fun of eventually. The police are even shown falling over each other.

This also offers a rare opportunity to see Mantan Moreland in a comedy and not just as comic relief. In films where he is the only one doing comedy it is easy to forget he was popular on the chitlin circuit (the Black club scene during segregation) for years. In the context where EVERYONE is a characature and comedy is coming from all sides you can appreciated his timing and reactions much more.

I'm happily joining the people who have given this 5 stars - the fun the cast is having is infectious and you'll have fun watching this one.

Subject: Great Entry
I love the Charlie Chan films. I have seen many of them numerous times. This is one of the best out there. A great Toler performance with some cool sight gags.

Subject: This One PD??
I know years back this one was PD .. kind've wondering about now though as it was released by MGM in the Chanthology Box set , along with 5 other Oland Monogram entries. I've got all the existing Chan films & i must say that of all the Monograms , this is my absolute choice as the best. Enjoy to all who download ... it's a gem in the ruff

Subject: Cute and fun.
Made a couple years before his death, typical Toler, with good supporting cast. Mystery, but with laughs.
