I had only several members of my family with literary backgrounds and one was Lois Rather, a cousin from my parent's generation. She was a retired teacher and an accomplished writer. She and her husband Cliff ran the Rather Press which did limited print runs using a letter press. During one vist she suggested that I might like H.L Mencken. I always took such suggestions from Lois seriously. I picked up a few collections of his essays at a used book store and found she was right. This reading of "The Politician" will introduce you to one of the most potent voices in 20th century American journalism.
