Welcome to my recording nightmare and this Frankenstein compilation of 3 different sources
A disaster of a night of recording for me.
The show started before my equipment was fully set up and I had a very difficult time figuring out what was wrong in the dark.
My recording program kept saying "No Input" and crashing.
After struggling for the first 10 minutes I gave up and walked away so I could enjoy the performance.
Came back after a while and tried again.
Ended up that the Compact Flash card was not fully inserted into the IPAC computer slot.
By the time it was running I had missed the first 25 minutes of the show.
The second set started and the IPAC (hand held computer) looked normal like everything was working fine.
No such luck.
I guess I had crashed the program so many times it was just getting back at me.
Turns out there was nothing but 90 minutes of silence on that card.
At least I wasn't stressing for the entire show.
Although it's a bit painful now.
Glad there were others recording.
This is how it is put together here...
1. Regarding the source for the majority of the first set:
Recorded by Mike Martin
With 2 Sennheiser e-614 microphones on stands near the edges of the stage
Recorded with a core sound 24-96 > IPAC computer (well should say almost recorded)
Spliced the two sources together at the 25:33 mark or 4:42 of the second track
It is the point where the recording goes to a wide stereo sound.
2. Regarding the source used to fill in the first 25 minutes and for almost all of the second set:
Can't remember his name but he said he had Neumann KM55 microphones > (I think) Sony PCM-M10
Recorded in the back of the room and both microphones were on a single stand.
CD's were burnt and given out after the show.
Disc 1 was very scratched up so I only used the beginning for the first set.
Disc 2 was missing Interstellar Overdrive.
Of course, another dose of Murphy's law.
3. Regarding the final source used for the final song "Interstellar Overdrive":
The version used to complete this show can be found in the "music" section at archive.org
https://archive.org/details/MermenAndHenryKaiser11082014
The version at this location is mp3 but what is used here came from a torrent site and was in flac24 format
Recorded by Chris Berry from FOB
2 Church Audio CA-11 microphones > Sony PCM-M10 at 28/48k
Audacity (fades and cuts) > flac 24 (level 8)
to put these different sources together:
Audacity was used to clean up some diginoise at about 6:30 of disc 1 track 1 then to convert the last song to 16-44.
Adobe Audition 3.0 for the splices and minor repairs.
CD Wav to cut tracks on sector boundaries
Traders Little Helper to convert to flac (level 8) and create checksums and fingerprints
Stamp ID3 tag editor to add the song titles and other info
Many thanks to the musicians and to the tapers that helped complete this.
Additional thanks to Denise Halbe for the beautiful posters.
enjoy

Some recommendations for further listening – if you're into this lineup, look for "Jazz Free", which features Henry, Jim & Allen. For more twin-guitar Mermen, check out 1999-03-27 from the short-lived lineup with Randy Clark on second guitar. If you like the tribute nature of this show, check out the Endless Summer set on 2016-10-07.
The incorporation of Spanish Jam and Feelin' Groovy are nice touches, a couple of Archive posts nicely cover their history and relationship to Dark Star:

Thanks also to FlyingM's Herculean effort to publish this show.
Subject: Great fun, and some deep delveing
Four stars for the performance, there are some clunky moments, say in "Fishing Hole" , but it is a jam after all .
Five Stars for the sound .
Six stars for the effort .
People download this, and sit back and smile .
