Pure speed run of Metroid II: Return of Samus, completed on March 16 2004. The displayed end time is ignored due to a flaw in the game's saving system which rounds the time down to whole minutes. The listed time is from the start of spawning until saving/the end.

I bought metroid 2 off eBay cheap in december 2003 to try a speed run of it, I hadn't played it in about a decade. I got lost like everyone, and when I didn't like the quality of other maps out there, I made my own which delayed the starting of my run until feb 17th 2004. I made great progress, getting 5 parts done in the first week but then I bought zero mission and that delayed the rest of the run.
Finally I got it finished and beat my own expectations as usual, I expected 1:03-4 at best. There's a lot of little mistakes in the run, but I can blame almost all of them on my old SNES controller where pushing left requires just the right amount of thumb-killing pressure. Now that I have a game boy player and can play on gamecube, I might try for 1:01.
The hardest part about a pure speed run is figuring out which missiles and other items to skip, I only get 10/22 of the missile expansions and have to be good with my aim to not run out. The hardest decision was getting the varia, but I ended up getting it so I could do the acid trip in part6, but it only saves about 15-20 seconds because of the time to get the varia.
