Ever since the release of Zero Mission, it seems like no one has cared about any% runs. All the attention and focus was on 100% speed runs, and no one really bothered to really try any% runs. I¹ve always enjoyed any% speed runs more than 100% speed runs, not only in Metroid games, but in video games in general. I'm more interested in what the fastest possible time is, rather than the fastest possible time with all the items. For this reason, I have yet to even complete a 100% game in MZM, let alone a 100% speed run. I started messing around with any% routes shortly after the game came out. I tried Ridley first runs, Kraid first runs, runs where I skipped the Screw Attack, runs where I got Screw Attack, etc. After some experimentation I thought I had the best possible route, and ended up with a time of 34:29. Radix started doing any% runs, however, and finished his run shortly after mine with his 34:43. I was a bit discouraged at how close his run was to mine, seeing as how much time I put into mine and he finished his in one night. Well there was a major difference in our runs: I got the Screw Attack, and he didn't. Immediately after finding this out, I began working on a new run with a slightly altered route. I am now convinced that the route Radix and I take (skipping SA but collecting Hi Jump) is the best route for an any% run. I have to give Radix a lot of credit for this run, since I did use the route he came up with.
Overall this is a very solid run. I estimate no more than 30 seconds worth of mistakes, which is excellent in my opinion. There are plenty of random factors that have to go right while speed running this game, so getting perfect segments can be very difficult. I might try to someday get 30:xx, but for now I am very satisfied with this. Enjoy!
