Interesting read; helps the movie make more sense
After reading this book back in the '80s, the film made a whole lot more sense. All these years laterl the the thing that stands out most about it--or at least the English translation of Von Harbou's prose--is the way the rhythm of it reflects the cadence of the machines.
Historical note: To be completely accurate, this is not a novelization of the film. The book was published in 1925 and the film, released in 1927, is an adaptation book. Needless to say, the original 2.5-hour edit is more faithful to the book.
