Subject: So sad it's too fast
This is one of those songs - as some more in this John Hurt collection indeed suffer from this - that might elude the contemporary reader. Although John played reels and jigs and rags, the tempo here is way too fast because it was recorded way too slow.
By an engineer with a hand cranked mastercutter that got way too much into the song and lost his speed ...
In this case you should stress the song to about 110% to obtain something similar to the actual recording situation. Do it with good recording software and without maintaining pitch.
This is a true story, a fact. What a compliment to the artist.
