The Emmyfest concerts were initiated in 2008 by the Musicians for Mitochondrial Awareness to raise awareness about mitochondrial diseases and disorders. All proceeds from the shows go directly to a mitochondrial disease foundation, in this case the UMDF (link to UMDF.
The lineup at Emmyfest II included an eclectic mix of music: Louis Ledford, Stump Hole Water, Modern Groove Syndicate, The Atkinsons, the Big Guys, Loose Gravel and Moossa.
The concert was recorded and a compilation will be released at a later date. The Moossa set captured a soulfully energetic performance. The rhythm section of Ryan Davis and Scott Lewis was on fire that night and they set the rest of the band up for a great show. Hear singer Nancy Waldman put her sizzling stamp on the Lucinda Williams cover Can’t Let GO and deliver an exceptional version of Elvis Costello's Watching the Detectives. Trey and Jim dazzle throughout culminating in the wild dueling guitar ride at the end of Its True. Trumpet player Scott Frock, one of Richmond’s best players in a city rich with talent, blew with gusto and added to the carnival of sound. John Moossa's vocals were suffering from an afternoon of meet and greet but in their hoarseness lent character and validity to Prodigal Son and Rock Down Steady. The band dipped into its catalog and sprinkled the set with songs from Last Night, Step Right Up and the more recent release Route 17 as well as a diverse selection of cover songs from Williams, The Police, Pink Floyd and Costello. All in all the show had aspects of an old time revival. Tenderly brought back to life by Trey through hour upon hour of remix MOOSSA Live Volume 1 represents the band at its best. Enjoy!
