Subject: Extraodrinary
1956 wasn't just the scene of "Happy Days". We had a crisis in the "explosive Middle East", the Soviets crushing a rebellion in Hungary, floods, air crashes, and more!

A great reel that's remarkable, not just in terms of covering the visuals of an eventful year, but in terms of the intricacy with which news reels were made.

Note how each scene is exquisitely orchstrated. The music is a key feature of this newsreel, and the composer is to be congratulated. He or she manages to conjure up a wide range of moods - from ominous to frivolous -
that add a dimension to the visuals that is wholly lacking in our 24 x 7 news landscape.

Subject: Plane crashes in half in Missippi, saved by water matress and microscopic creatures!
This excellent compilation includes:
Ike is reelected. Was shown some nice election footage here. From the election office right around the corner, to election booths in Chinatown in San Fransisco, heck, even in nursing homes! Everyone is happy to vote for Ike!
Next, we see the tensions between Egypt and Israel heat up, Israel invades Egypt, Egypt battles back, then in retaliation they sink some ships in the suez canal, thereby blocking it. Good thing the UN came in and settled everything! Whew!
Some rather sad and amazing footage is shown of the Hungarian Revolution. Hungary tries opposing the russian forces, seems victorious, only to be crushed again. Sad, but a timeless snapshot of Communism at it's worst.
In India, the Gunu river floods, causing chaos. People run out to the water clogged streets. all in a franzy.
Meanwhile in the USA, The Mississippi gets a mattress to prevent flooding. I'm still not too sure of how it works but it's pretty wild to see this installed.
Next we see soem acrobatic firemen demonstrating fire rescue techniques using the fire blanket catcher and slides. One fireman nearly misses the slide lol.
After that, a scientist works FOR PEACE with atoms, showing for the first time in many a film, they're doing it in a SAFE manner, like behind protective glass, using robotic hands. None of this really long clamp stuff. Oh, and as I said, this is working with atoms for PEACE, alright?
The DEW line's construction is profiled next, as we see ships hurrying to get to the arctic before winter sets in. The DEW (Defense Early Warning) system's history is excellently shown in The DEW line story (which is another film on here).
Excellent footage is shown when a plane crashes in the middle of the ocean and it's rescue. Contrary to popular belief, planes don't land nicely in water. At least, this plane didn't. The plane plainly breaks in half. Noone, according to this, is seriously hurt. Wow!
Finally, we see a scientist explore life under the sea. The deeeep sea, I mean microscopic. not exactly something you havent seen, but enjoyable nevertheless.
GREAT batch this time around, highly reccomended!

three soviet war memorials smashed and destroyed...flags burned...and books
set on fire / giant red star razed from rooftop ,sent crashing to street /
VS civilians (rebels) shoot rifles & automatic weapons in streets and parks
at enemy positions in buildings / rebel tanks fire cannon in streets of
Budapest / brief shot, Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty / fast moving Russian
