Many people in this film had long careers in TV and movies. Regis Toomey alone had many starring roles and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Hedda Hopper became a famous Hollywood gossip columnist who was close friends with Joseph McCarthy. Charles Grapewin played Inspector Queen in seven different "Ellery Queen" mystery films, and Wallace Ford was all over TV throughout the 50's and 60's.

Worth the 66 minutes to watch this nice little mystery - not a great film, but a decent plot and entertaining progression. Charley Grapewin is fine, as are Hedda Hopper and Arthur Hohl. The rest of the cast are Ok - if you can stand the typical wiseguy character favored for/by Wallace Ford - I can't - under what stone did Hollywood find him? He is strictly an acquired taste - would have made a fine fourth Ritz Brother.

Watching Hedda Hopper at the end of her acting career and just before her gossip column career was fun. She made far more money blackmailing stars to keep their sordid secrets out of print than she did in over 20 years of acting. Here she plays one of her stock characters, that of a society matron.
Thoroughly entertaining romp even though many of the night scenes were too dark to be properly viewed.

I kind of thought this wasn't going to be all that good - seen one old, dark house mystery, you've seen them all - but this one really is special.... I don't know how to explain why it's special, but it just sits down besides you like an old friend.
You just feel like they were having the best time ever making it and I found the whole thing just so warm and fun and easy to watch I couldn't help but like it.

Once you get past the title's questionable grammar, you'll find this to be an entertaining old-dark-house who-done-it with an emphasis on humor. The fun starts when two girls show up in the middle of a thunderstorm (of course) claiming to be a cantankerous old millionaire's long-lost granddaughter. The plot works. The wisecracks are fun. This B-feature has a solid ensemble cast of A-feature character actors that includes Charley Grapewin as the millionaire. Regis Toomey appears in one of his leading man roles. Save this one for a dark and stormy night. Then turn the lights down, cuddle up with whoever or whatever, and enjoy. FOOTNOTE: Sometimes it seems like there are hundreds of old-dark-house mysteries. Here are a few I think are fun: "The Old Dark House" (of course), "Bat Whispers," "The Bat," "The Black Cat," "Spider Baby" and "The Gorilla" (if you like the Ritz Brothers). Finally, one that doesn’t exactly fit the mold, but it's such a great movie I'm adding it anyway: "And Then There Were None." Most are available here at the Archive.

The old man emits some funny lines. Some notable quotes:
08:36
"Oh, don't be anymore of an idiot than you can help, sheriff"
40:50
"A remarkable woman! She won't talk!"
(After somebody refuses to reveal some info.)
59:34
"Maybe a little light would help you, sheriff"
(After turning on the light.)
The picture is indeed a bit dark, but if you turn the contrast in your media player to the maximum, you'll be alright.

I like this movie. It was hard to see though most of it took place in the near dark. The night was stormy and the house was dark. Relatives gathered to get money from their rich relative who was still alive. I did not understand that the house had electricity but the people used candles in several of the scenes. Anyway is was funny, the magician added lots of humor to the part.

Wallace Ford (listed as Wally in the credits) provides most of the comedy in this Old House mystery. A rich old coot wants to gift his fortune to those closest to him to avoid a new inheritance law, when on cue not one but two copies of the favored prodigal granddaughter arrive to spoil the deal. Murder ensues, but who done it?
