Reginald Owen is a very good actor...
Longevity and range. From Scrooge to this to the captain in Mary Poppins. He usually played a more stylized version of British men. Here, a more naturalistic middle-aged Home Guard member. Quite a moment when he found his wife's shoe.
Also, the writers deserve praise for knowledge of colloquial British beyond the usual,
e.g., "we suit each other" in response to someone remarking on his relationship with his wife.
For the time, this must have cost them a fortune. It would be interesting to know if they borrowed sets from a filming or recently filmed war movie. Maybe from one of the WWII series from the early Sixties?
