Oxfordshire's recently-formed Anglo-Arab duo Maqam are already creating a sensation in the local area. Egyptian oudh-player Tariq Beshir is a key member of East/West fusionists Brickwork Lizards, while fiddler Giles Lewin is well known for his work with the Carnival Band, the Dufay Collective and Bellowhead. They played at Oxford Town Hall on Tuesday 26th January to an enthralled group of children from St Ebbe's Primary School. Their performance was in support of an exhibition highlighting the plight of the children of Gaza. The display, 'Children of Gaza under Fire' includes photographs, and also drawings created by Gazan children in response to the bombardment of 2008/9.
