Subject: Wonderful Radio, Over The Top
Before Jack Webb became Sgt. Joe Friday he was Pat Novak, and on this short-lived series the tone was very different from the later DRAGNET, as it was a mystery series rather than a police procedural one. The stories themselves aren't extraordinary but the writing often is. Jack Webb's dialogue and narration comes off like Raymond Chandler at his wittiest and most sarcastic. Webb's deadpan (if you can call radio acting deadpan) delivery is perfect. At times the show almost seems like a send-up of detective series of the forties. I found myself laughing out loud more than once listening to this show. I suspect that the makers of PAT NOVAK had a good time when working on it. I certainly had a good time listening to it. Highly recommended.
