Subject: Normal is what everybody regards as normal, but that doesn't mean it's good.

Yeah you are right this film is outdated.
But NOT because the moral message in the film is off, but because we are now living in what for that Putnam guy must be the worst nightmare. I meen seriously the reason why you young guys (children propably :-) find the film ridicoulous is because all those things he is describing as so terrible have now become completely normal even to really young children. But does that make it good?
I mean serously (i live in europe) and ussualy when i walk down the streets, there are whores looking for customers even at day.
And their pimps look so scarry that it seems like one wrong look on my part could make them draw their knife.

So yeah look i am only 21 myself, and since i was like 5 i was constantly exposed to a society like that. Would you call that good? isn't that what Puttnam tried to warn us from?

So when i give this thing 5 stars now, i mean it.

There's nothing more dull than an opinionated filmed lecture. Spoken in exaggerated tones for emphasis,the facts given seem,for the most part, overblown. Imagine what he would have to say now about cable & satellite television programs!

I swear, thatÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs exactly what he says. With a straight face. Which is why the Prelinger Archives are such a godsend. TodayÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs conservatives are much more subtle, have much better speech writers and well-calibrated focus groups, but they hold exactly the same ludicrous ideas that are portrayed in this film. Subject: Cure worse than the so called "disease"!

This movie, although completely bigoted and offensive, offers an explanation of modern homophobia as well as sexual values and mores of the time. In the background, you can see a pin tacked over my city, (Montreal) evidently it was a hub of perversion at the time. Fair enough.
Another common theme you can see is the equation of homosexuality and paedophilia,an intensely harmful and untrue stereotype which gay men still have to fight today. This movie is still worth watching, and may even have some future relevance if the Republicans stay in the White House. Americans sexual and religious ideals are reverting back to the 50's quite quickly, maybe this would be a good field guide for what will be acceptable in the repressive future

How can the Harvard sociologist quoted in this film claim to know exactly how perverted cavemen were?
I think its an unfair and ill-informed comparison. We know so little about the cultural aspects of pre-historic humans, let alone what their sexual norms may have been.
I'm sure its OK to judge our ancestors of 100,000+ years ago by the standards of one film announcer of the 1950's.

After sifting through all 45 of these reviews we can see the reviews fall in two catagories with the occasional independant. This posting will be anti-porn for the benifit of the 'get to the point' folks. There is no "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" vibed, 3:00 a.m,repressed evangelical infommercial reason for my being anti-porn; My reasons are strictly secular. "your uptight about your sexuality" "Did something happen to you,so you have issues?" "You've been programmed by religious freaks" These are the standard, doller-store quality reactions, people fire off at low profile anti-porn debates. They sound played out to the ear. The secular reasons for being an opponent of porn. are not interested in arguing with the "come'on preacha'-man, what's a matter, can't handle a little skin?" robots, simply because it is not religious in nature. Young kids already view the world in a psychedelic way, [an effect that wares away in some as they get older] and to use this child as the certerpiece of a porn. film [as occours around the world] or for children themselves to transfix on material, alter their perception there-after. One could replicate a similar vivid experience on any of the more jaded, readers here by giving them an unfashionably high dose of LSD and putting them into the plasticy, cold-white light, Dawn of the Dead atmosphere of an abandoned department store, and absolutly convince them that they were about to be tortured, in a most sarcastic ["were going to wear bunny suits"] type of way. Then a person could get a window into a childs brain who is either abducted and used for porn, or from an abusive parent who will use the child for porn. note that the LSD was included in order to open up the subjects mind. The experience would be serious enough straight, but in order to replicate the psych-burn that it would cause a child. this element is needed. The porn that is created during war time [i.e. Bosnian War] where paramilitary units, in order to increase their spoils, film rape for an exclusive client base is added to the world wide inventory.
The largest portion of underground, overseas, porn is commercial rape. Commercial rape is when the women in the film do not appear to be captive but really are due to human trafficing. The theme of the films are not rape, they just look like ultra serious, low budget eastern-bloc porn. Many of you who casually enjoy unpolished, seemingly ameturish foreign porn are watching women who are performing against their will, and told if they do not act like they want it, will never get their visa/passport/papers back. Without exciting language: you will masturbate to it, clean up, make a snack and return to your tax-paying. This person is like the sneaker-wearing citizen, who "thinks child labor is a bad thing and all" but really doesn't know that just after his pair rolled past the 10 year old boy's work station, the automated packaging system fouled and the kids arm came clean off, 4 inches above the wrist.

I didn't learn one thing about how to make a profit out of my perversion, and instead felt insulted the whole time. Well, I guess learning that blind people don't go to nudist colonies is worth a star. I might have wasted a fortune target marketing nudist camps to the blind. One more star for the irony of telling us that adult male heterosexuals can be "perverted" by viewing images of HOMO-SEX-Uals, all the while showing us dozens of pictures of gay porn.... uh oh.....

I think that the real take-away in this movie is that folks need to be more careful in handling their pornographic materials. Perhaps if everyone simply kept there porn in a suitable, hidden location, maybe 75-90% of it wouldn't end up in the hands of children. Be responsible people! Lock up your porn, since in fact prolonged exposure might make your child a homo-SEX-ual, and if we've watched "Boys Beware" we know that one never knows where the deviant homo-SEX-ual might be about.

As a counterpoint to this film, though, I strongly recommend you watch "Empty Life" (also on the archives.) If my wife had as many headaches as this poor chap's, I'd be at the newsstand every day after work.

However, since it is clear that this aberrant literature may make all of society become transsexuals, I firmly recommend we abolish airflight and high-speed trains to stop the dissemination of this filth by the big-business, salacious bastards who profit from it.

On another note, for a movie that's anti-porn this flick is pretty racy. Frankly, I came away not wanting to abolish porn, but more so wanting to take a trip to my local newsstand. This hilarious anti-porn documentary was produced by none other than millionaire savings-and-loan criminal Charles Keating. So, pornography is bad, but it's okay to steal people's life savings? What hypocrisy!

Like most pinheaded conservative blowhards, host Putnam refuses to consider society's real ills (lack of employment and a living wage, underfunded public schools, domestic violence, racism, etc.) and uses pornography as a scapegoat in much the same way that Hitler blamed Jews for Germany's woes.

While it's true that pornography and promiscuity can become addictions, so can smoking, drinking, and gambling. Alcoholism and compulsive gambling and their effects are far more destructive to the family unit than pornography, yet you don't hear a word about those subjects. That's because these same conservatives like to sip on snifters of brandy at the country club while they bet on sporting events.

And let's not forget the damaging effects of religion. There's nothing like religion to inspire fear, ignorance, and intolerance. Over the centuries, more innocent people have been murdered in the name of religion than for any other reason. The Catholic Church alone has exterminated more people than Hitler and Stalin combined, but like Bob Dylan once sang, you don't count the dead when God's on your side.

Criticisms aside, I still give this film five stars for its camp value. It's a real hoot to watch this idiot Putnam rant and rave and interpret the meanings of pictures in dirty magazines in ways that make no sense whatsoever.

The bottom line is that regardless of what you believe about the subject of pornography, Perversion For Profit is a must-see on this site.

Mr. Putnam begins his presentation by saying he will recite "facts" and then promptly launches into a thesis statement of highly subjectivew and value laden conclusions. The remainder of this clip proceeds in essentially that fashion, with the occassional statistic thrown in which only leaves one to wonder whay Mr. Putnam considers as included in the revenue stream of porno and the number of outlets. Does he include detective magazines (staple of kinky softcore porn), confession magainzes (a nongraphic presentation of female oriented pornography for the most part) and for the matter American Photographer and National Geographic?

This film was probably not very persuasive except to an audience already inclined to despise all "loose morals" in the media, including mere coverage of Hollywood raciness in dress and romance. The people of the era this film was made for were not dunces merely because the prevailing standards of public candor at the time squelched most of the material depicted as unsuitable for minor and public display. The thinness of factual presentation about the actual harm of the literature would have mattered most.
