Leon Schlesinger StudiosPorky Pig: Ali Baba Bound (1940/1968)

The Arabs look evil and behave really bad in this racist cartoon, but the heroic pig looks a little strange too. There are no references to religion here, but some of the Arab stereotypes depicted have been revitalized in recent caricatures of Muslims, notably in the caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.

From The Public Domain Movie Database:
Can Porky save the fort from invasion by Ali Baba? Porky must defeat Ali Baba's army and secret weapons in order to be hero.

PS March 2, 2008: Thanks to Logoliker2004 for noting that this is a colorized version of the original black and white cartoon (which is in the Public Domain). IMDb describes the alternate versions: "This cartoon was colorized in 1968 by having every other frame traced over onto a cel. Each redrawn cel was painted in color and then photographed over a colored reproduction of each original background. Needless to say, the animation quality dropped considerably from the original version with this method. The cartoon was colorized again in 1992, this time with a computer adding color to a new print of the original black and white cartoon. This preserved the quality of the original animation."

Subject: Porky to the the rescue!
A pretty good PP cartoon here. In this one, Porky must defend his fort from the advancing Arabs! Being the timeframe, there's plenty of jokes being offered at the Arab's expense. Very odd, but funny in the sense of what they could get away with. (Especially that 'Suicide Squad' guy.)

Subject: Ah yes, the silly redrawn-colorized version of this classic...
This is a good cartoon, but it's colorization is not so good. I never saw the original black and white version, just this one and the computer-colorized version. The computer colorized one has better details and animation, while the Korean redrawn artists made several mistakes colorizing this one (is that a fly sitting there when Porky exits the Brown Turban? Yuck!) But I enjoyed the ending, which always makes me laugh.

The reason I gave this three stars was cause of the colorization on this print, which was not done in 1940, but back in 1967 or 1968. This version's also been slowed down from original speed. I have a public domain LT VHS tape with this cartoon, and even though it's the redrawn colorized version, it plays at normal speed.
