David Edwin HillPortrait of feeding female Phidippus audax (2007)
Phidippus audax is a large and widely-distributed jumping spider (Araneae: Salticidae), found throughout a large part of North America, particularly in the East. This spider can be found in many habitats, including old-fields in South Carolina. This movie, based on jumping spiders from Greenville County, South Carolina, shows adult and immature spiders feeding on spider and insect prey. Their powerful, iridescent chelicerae are used to macerate soft-bodied prey, and otherwise to penetrate and extract fluids from hard-bodied prey.
