During the 1980's and 1990's, radio producer John Gullak hosted a weekly program called "No Other Radio," which was broadcast statewide from Berkeley, California, via station: KPFA. This somewhat legendary program showcased a wide variety of underground and experimental composers. On January 30th, 1990, Herd Of The Ether Space founders: Charles Rice Goff III, Killr "Mark" Kaswan, and Robert Silverman were interviewed and performed three live improvisations on Gullak's show.
On January 28th, 1990, Goff, Kaswan, and Silverman rehearsed at the Taped Rugs studio in Oakland, California, for their upcoming radio appearance. The first three pieces in this archive were recorded at this rehearsal. Later in 1990, these pieces were released by Taped Rugs Productions on the cassette album: "President Nixon Fights The Dope Scourge." This cassette album also features the fourth piece in this archive, "Injecting The Donkey Skin," which is a 45-minute collage of improvisations recorded by Goff, Kaswan, and Silverman on July 8th, 1989, and on December 17th, 1989. "President Nixon Fights The Dope Scourge" was co-released by Nihilistic Recordings of the Netherlands.
On the actual night that the Herd appeared on Gullak's radio program, KPFA was haunted by specters who infected the radio station's electronics and produced broadcasts that sounded quite different to the radio listeners than they did to the performers at the radio station. The next two pieces in this archive, "The Most Beautiful Orange" and "Organ In My Car (Alternate Version)" were created from recordings made on a four-track cassette deck, which served as a pre-amp for the Herd at the KPFA studio during the group's on-air performances. These two pieces were released to the public in 1993 by Taped Rugs on the cassette album: "Alternative Transportation." "Alternative Transportation" was co-distributed by OOH OOH MUSIC of Canton, Ohio.
The last three pieces in this archive were recorded directly from a radio outside of the KPFA studio. They represent exactly what listeners heard over the airwaves on that mysterious night in late January, 1990.
This archive also contains the cover art for the cassette albums: "President Nixon Fights The Dope Scourge" and "Alternative Transportation."
