As technoculture accelerates away from the off-the-shelf love'n'unity vibe of the early '90s, the music has become edgier and more introspective. Lagowski's from London, but works a lot in Berlin, Europe's electronic dark heart. It shows. Edgy drums flit over buzzing bass notes. Hollow synths cascade like shattering glass. The music keeps promising a safe, ecstasy-friendly build, then shies away, returning to an introspective, almost gloomy plateau. It's not always an easy ride, but then maybe that's the point. - Mo Kaye (Hari Kunzru), Wired (1995).
