You show a lack of familiarity with the band members and the way this band is designed to operate with your crass comments.
Anyone who knows who Jay is knows that it is Bobby, as band leader, not Jay who is setting tempo. Just as Jerry did in the dead and Phil does in his band.
Bobby beautifully strips the dead catalogue down to its deep and dirty rhythmic dance-Band roots and revels in that beautiful swampiness. Oozing blue-jazz with dashes of this and that.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Phil has taken the dead catalog and maximizes the compositions in an almost Wagner-esque dramatic way. He creates 20-30 min orchestral pieces with multiple movements out of what were originally simple 5–7 min standards.
I love both bands. But Bobby likes to play it low and slow and to wallow in that dirty deep groove. It requires a precision drummer. Trust me Jay Lane does not lack energy, ambition, or the technical ability to play fast. He’s probably one of the fastest drummers on the planet when he wants to be.
Go listen to the original Primus lineup, which he was an original member of believe it or not. If you know anything about Primus they play with fast drummers and Jay Lane fit right in with any of the drummers that they have ever played with that band.
The band sausage was a side project of Les Claypool‘s where Jay is on drums. There’s also the Claypool projects Holy mackerel, and frog brigade which happen to both include mr. Jeff chimenti on keys in addiction to Jay lane on drums. Jay also has a duo album with les. And has been on and off touring his whole career with him. Trust me, he’s a wicked competent drummer simply playing a different(arguably harder) role here.
I have to say even as a gigantic kimock fan prior to this ratdog run with Steve, I have still preferred some songs with mark as opposed to Steve. No knock on Steve in that. It’s really just mad respect for Mark if anything. I think what Steve did here was amazing coming in and seamlessly doing the job in a beyond professional manner. And as the tour goes on you can tell that they start to coalesce better and better. But there a certain song is where I had come to look for the way Mark approaches them. And I missed that on some songs. Jackstraw was one such song. But I have to give it to Steve that this version is got to be one version that I have to say I cannot insist I prefer Mark over Steve at least the way Steve played it here. As I said other times I preferred Mark over Steve’s jackstraw playing but Steve takes the cake if I’m just using this performance man! Kudos.
And great recording. Was robin playing his upright or his EBass tonite or did he switch back and forth? Just curious…

Happy day,
I was laid up in the hospital just down the road. My friend sat at my bedside and held my hand, telling me how she was going to be brave and go to the show without me. It is something of a joke, being a veteran of hundreds of shows, but some things are better in the telling than in the knowing silence.
Some time later she must've given me the show in this bright orange CD case and I promptly misplaced it, until today.
I don't really know what to say. The sax totally pimps everything it touches. Dark Star was gorgeous and Masters of War came out of where? And Eyes? Really? Just, you know, all very pretty powerful.
So thanks to the boys in the band, and to my friend, who was totally negligent in making sure that I listened to this show. Just cause you give a Deadhead music doesn't mean she/he's gonna remember to listen to it. Follow up, people! :-)
Thanks Dena.

Well, I've been trying towarm up to these ratdog shows, I really WANT to get into it, but I don't know.. I love all this music, I've been a fan of this stuff for 30 years, but I just can't get stoked about this Ratdog band, the drummer during jack Straw was so slow and seemingly unispired, sounded like the excitment of a click track.. I love Bobby's tunes, I love the songs, but the energy is just barley reaching the "eh" factor!
I looking for some insight, why does this seem like lazy broring music?

"Friend Of The Devil" is worth the D/L alone. I will always be thankful to my wife for introducing me to the Dead, to Bobby, to festivals, and to the jam everywhere. Great sounding show.

I have had trouble warming up to ratdog over the years, but lately have found the music to be more to my liking - including this show, which is fantastic. You Win Again, FOTD, Eyes, Sugaree all stand out in that stellar second set. Is that still Kimock on the guitar? If so, it seems like they are giving him more space - and he does not disappoint.

I was at this show with a group of friends. being completely dosed, i broke into tears after hearing "we can share the women, we can share the wine" after the jam before jack straw. the slow train is amazing to drive to... very head-bobbing music. the dire wolf had me on my tippie-toes and the brokedown palace was straight beauty.

I wish someone would upload some MP3s of this show. I am dying to hear this Jack Straw!
Updated 12/8/07: This show ROCKS. What a great AUD tape!!! This Jack Straw is insane! I love how they really open it up for Steve on the second solo! Slow Train Comin, Dire Wolf, Lazy River Road.....whoa! Acoustic versions of You Win Again and FOTD are very satisfying. A monster EYES is huge! GDTRFB and Brokedown Palace are perfect. Allaround this is a solid Ratdog performance. Thanks to all who made this happen. Peace out - G
