Barry George is an Austin sculptor and social activist. In 1986 he began working with found objects and making yard sculptures. Now much of his work is interactive, requiring the viewer to manipulate the sculpture. Also in 1986 – as El Salvador and Nicaragua were experiencing upheaval – he started Bikes Not Bombs in Austin, a project that gathered bicycles and sent them to Nicaragua. Barry recently returned from a visit to Palestine where he was part of a Christian Peacemaker Team in the Hebron area. He discusses his experience in Palestine – with emphasis on the Israeli settlements and the demolition of more than 25,000 Palestinian homes.
