Re-INGcarnation celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the very first -ING recording made by C. Goff III and Steve Schaer in Berkeley, California, in 1980. Goff and Schaer recorded and performed a considerable amount of experimental music as "-ING" during the early 1980's. Through their innovative uses of a Frippertronics-style tape loop system, Goff and Schaer developed a unique sound and on-stage presence. Goff founded Taped Rugs Productions in 1980 as an umbrella company for his artistic ventures, and through Taped Rugs, -ING was introduced to the world at large.
During the latter half of 1981 and the first half of 1982, percussionist Vernon Lawton added his considerable talents to -ING and briefly served as the group's third member. Lawton began playing drums at age three and spent his formable years studying and performing orchestral percussion as well as playing in jazz and rock bands. He regards the drums as a tonal instrument rather than as a strict time-keeping device, and his styles span the full range of musical genres and non-genres. Lawton and his drums have shared stages with members of Credence Clearwater Revival, The Band, and Buddy Miles Express. He was no longer playing with -ING, however, when Goff and Schaer began to perform publicly in January of 1983.
The last -ING public performance took place in September of 1984, at the San Francisco Inter-Dada Festival. Sadly, Schaer took his own life in 1998. While archiving -ING recordings in 2008, Goff (living in Kansas) located Lawton (living in Washington), and the two began corresponding for the first time in over 25 years. They soon were sharing recordings of their more recent works, and this interaction led them to begin collaborating on a new project -- a new -ING for the 21st Century.
The eight pieces presented here represent the first harvest from their renewed association. All of these compositions were created by Goff and Lawton, each working alone, layering recordings one over another. In fact, at the time of this release, Goff and Lawton had still not seen one another in person for over 25 years. Pieces 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 were started by Lawton and finished by Goff. Pieces 3, 7, and 8 were started by Goff and finished by Lawton. These compositions showcase a wide variety of instruments, non instruments, sampled sounds, and computer-generated tones. Goff used a digital loop duplicator (rather than a tape loop system) to orchestrate some of his single-take performances of guitar and synthesizer. Both improvisation and careful editing played significant roles in the creation of these compositions.
"Rosie Notes" and "The Aquarium" were originally composed by Goff and Schaer and were regularly performed by the original -ING of the 1980's. The first recording of "The Aquarium" was, in fact, recorded during what might be considered to be the first true -ING recording session in 1980. That 1980 session is archived here:
"Impromptu Fertility Rite" contains a few edits of Schaer's voice, recorded on cassette during the early 1980's.
The version of "Insert Art Here" in this archive incorporates digital sound loops that Goff created for the Tapegerm sound-scultpting website at www.tapegerm.com. The piece was first released to the public on the Tapegerm site as "Insert Art Here Redux" in October of 2009. Goff produced a Dadaist video incorporating this piece as the soundtrack in 2010. The video is also included in this archive.
