Gene Autry - Goes to South Africa - LOL
With as stupid and weird a plot as you could hope to find in any western, we find Texas transported to South Africa - the streets, the bars look the same - in a non-action western with loads of singing. The unfortunate racial stereotypes of the day - in the portrayal of Black tribal South Africans - is offensive save for a few scenes that seem to mimic real African dance and drumming - very likely stock footage. The Cabin Kids were a fine vocal group appearied in 3 films and 14 shorts between 1935-38 - from IMDb. Smiley Burnette gets a large role here as "magician" and music teacher to the African tribal leader's children - Burnette is here for comic relief and is, in my opinion, an acquired taste. Maxine Doyle is cute and sings and acts well enough - IMDb says between 1933-45 she appeared in 38 films before retiring. LeRoy Mason plays his usual deceitful good guy/bad guy role. Dick Wessel (henchman Craig), in a long career between 1935-66 of 307 film/TV appearances and can be seen in "Dick Tracey vs. Cueball" and doing comic turns in various 3 Stooges shorts. Cornie Anderson (Namba) was in 2 films in 1937, but can be seen to better effect in a number of Amos and Andy TV shows in the early 1950s. Ray Corrigan, a cowboy star in his own right appears as the gorilla. Truly as picfixer noted, a curiosity.

Gorilla Suit Western
Bizarre Gene Autry western that really stars Smiley Burnette, who gets more screen time than Autry. Regardless of its title, this oater is set in South Africa, but of course it wasn't shot there. A senseless plot that even by the standards of its time (1937) is markedly racist. However, there are some good swing tunes performed by young, black singers. Even the guy in a gorilla suit can't save this one. Two stars as a curiosity. The intact print is watchable.
