Robert Bates was an American mountaineer best known for his First Ascent of Mt. Lucania and the 1938 and 1953 American Expeditions to K2. He served on the Board of the American Alpine Club numerous times, and was once Honorary President. On the '53 expedition to K2, Bates and 4 others were saved by Pete Schoening's ice axe, one of the greatest mountaineering belays of all time. Bates later received a David A. Sowles Award from the AAC.
