Sabeel, Arabic for "The Way", was founded by Liberation Theologist Naim Ateek, Episcopal Canon, Jerusalem, to reach out to Christians, Muslims and Jews struggling for peace in Palestine/Israel. Stating a 10-point process that articulates a Palestinian perspective, Dr. Ateek travels throughout the US to tell Americans what it will take to end the seemingly endless conundrum that has ravaged Palestinian society and become the root of much violence throughout the Middle East. Sabeel conference speakers add their voices to Dr. Ateek's logic. Included are Theologian Marc Ellis, Baylor University, Peace Advocate Mubarak Awad, Israeli citizens Jeff Halper and Roni Hammermann, Lawyers Michael Tarazi and Sherene Abdul-Hadi. To show that Palestinians have long sought a reasonable, just peace, but have been repeatedly rebuffed by Israeli opposition, this piece begins with a message from Dr. Haider Abdul-Shafi, chief negotiator at the Madrid Peace Talks, 1991.
