Wonderful historical footage of a horrid disaster. In 1972 while working at a coffee house on Market street I had occasion to explore the basement, which was original from before this event. I noticed a bottle partially buried under a bit of rubble, and went to remove it to examine it, only to find a skeleton hand gripping the neck of the old whisky bottle. An expert was called in who informed us that the had and bottle were remains from the earthquake. The hand was severed from a victim and when the poor fellow was removed his hand and his bottle had been over looked.
