From 1933, this features Mae West and Cary Grant. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture, awarded by the National Film Preservation Board in 1996, and one of the films given as a reason for the necessity of the National Legion of Decency. Ms. West is a singer and nightclub owner, while Cary Grant is a member of the local temperance league trying off and on to get her and others to mend their ways. One of her friends is a criminal in the big house whom happens to remain in love with her. He escapes and then the plot becomes a bit involved with double crosses and unexpected help. Subject: Mae West, Cary Grant - good stuff
Street tough. Men fightin' over a woman, and one woman that runs the local district because she runs the local hot nightclub, and the nightclub is hot because she's the atraction, personality, curves, and her recently painted nude life size painting just put up over the piano in the joint. Mae West, great side cracks and up front one liners. No gut busters though. Its more about the clever contiuing dialogue than the one moment grandstand lines. The opposing anti heroine says "After all I did for you, I gave you the clothes off my back", as a measure of deserved gratitude from him the supposed caring boyfriend, but Mae interjects and replies without missing a beat: "He needs more than clothes." Meaning he shouldn't owe her any gratitude at all and thus remain uncaring, the fool. Even when she is being malled and fondled by a lusting hood, she can keep him off of her and yet act like she still wants it at the same time, gracefully. There are a lot more lines from her in this movie than what she has in My Little Chickadee because she is THE lead. Cary Grant of course plays the undercover cop but plays a temperance, anti-alcohol advocate in the next door mission, but really he's a plant for observation purposes. And it all heads to a nice climax with the jealous and recently escaped from jail convict boyfriend. Gun shots, someone dies, the bad guy is defeated after a stand off. You don't watch this for the plot so much as seeing real talent like West and Grant working off each other, the last scene when they are both dressed to the hilt, its hard to describe how good they look. And Mae sings more than one song in this, and each song is a ribald bawdy tale of love and lust, with double meaning lines in it. These cheeky songs are cool. There is one in-appropriate comment made when Mae refers to her "maid", a woman of color, with the name of the black billiard ball reference. Other than that its a textbook toughguy flicker and pretty much harmless. Watch it for an education in tough guy and tough woman cool double talk lingo. Technically its a good digital file, it plays well, the audio is good. The video is good but just a tad dark, if it were lighter the resolution is high enough you could pick out a lot of detail but as it is right now dark "video blooms" occur here and there and engulf some of the moving image from time to time. I didn't download it but its definitely a collectible and an easy watch. The plot isn't difficult at all just pay attention.

That's what she actually said, the version you've heard is probably wishful thinking. There isn't much of a movie here; the legend that precedes it is far greater than the reality, I'm afraid.
Mae has a few good wink-wink nudge-nudge one liners, but not many.

There was very little plot to speak of but the movie did move right along. The acting was over-played which is to be expected being so close to the end of the silent-film era. Mae West stole the show as always and the very young Carry Grant did a pretty good job as well even if it was a small part. All in all, it was a decent time-filler. Thanks for posting it.

Subject: I checked the AVI out
I downloaded the avi version and played it on my two home computers and also my MVIX connected to the TV. The computers have VLC with the full distribution of the K-Lite Codec Pack (v. 2.27) and the MVIX has the 1.66 bios. In all three cases, the movie played fine. If you were trying to watch it through a computer, I assume you don't have updated codec's installed.
