Simon 'EzekielMartyr' BerggrenSilent Hill 2 (PS2) - 0:57:12 - Simon Berggren (2005)

Speed run of Silent Hill on normal mode, done on April 13 2005. Available in low quality and normal quality.

Author's comments:
This video is of a Silent Hill 2 start to finish completion of 57 minutes and 12 seconds for the playstation 2 version which was recorded onto VHS and then made into DivX.

This run was completed under the following settings:

-Normal Difficulty (Action/Riddle)

-Completely New Game (A "New Game" after the game has been finished at least once would allow the player to use bonus items and bonus endings).

-Any Ending except bonus endings. For those unfamiliar with all the endings they are labeled as:

1) Leave (Assumes the player wants to leave Silent Hill)

2) Maria (Assumes the player wants to be with Maria)

3) In Water (Assumes the player wants to kill himself)

4) Rebirth (A special ending unavailable in a new game as it requires bonus items. The characters makes an attempt at an ancient ritual in order to ressurect his dead wife).

5) DOG (A special ending unavailable in a new game as it requires the dog key and cuts off several minutes of the game and therefore is not allowed for speed run purposes).

-No bullet adjust, saving etc... is used.

Apart from that I would like to say that I am aware of the few mistakes I made during this run, so there's no need to point them out for me. I am currently trying to improve this run but it will take some time because I do not have access to a PS2 at the moment.

Very well played asside from the mistakes already mentioned. Ever thought of doing a speed run of SH3 ?

Excellent job. I have no real advice for any future runs you might plan to do except that when fighting the two pyramid heads at the end, it's easier to trap yourself in the corner and use the Great Knife. Make sure they're both in front of you and swing the knife with your back to the corner. If done right, the knife will cut through both of them before hitting the wall, then return from recoil from the wall and hit them both a second time. It's much easier than your hit-n-run strategy. It's also faster. I think you could shave off about 2 minutes doing it this way. Maybe more. Anyway, excellent job nonetheless.

Ok, So you covered the fact that you are aware of your mistakes, though as a reviewed, I'll point out just a few things. The mistakes are very minor to what I am looking at whether this is your first speed run or not, they are time consuming. For example, once you entered the staircase door and instead of turning and going upstairs, you kept going by mistake. No big deal, but costs you maybe 3 seconds... One way to correct this is to plan out your route first, replay the game a few times (Which you have done already), and remember rooms as you know already. I'll put out notices like D#(time x:xx:xx)so you know where the mistakes are and can look at em. A quick run through Just before doing the first and final Recording can lower the % of errors and mistakes by a large factor. One detail I liked and learnt since I have played this game before, is the flashlight attracts the monster's attention in the Hotel. I like that detail :). D#2(27:00/28:00): This is a good example of how you should do the game. You can see how quickly you go from room to room and directly to items without stopping, that part was perfect. Just a notice so you can see what I mean by the point I made out earlier about the staircase. D#3(28:25): 2 seconds lost(aprox.)
D#4(33:00): Im sure those monsters can be dealt with in order to save time, either a shotgun hit or maybe attracting them, cause there's a bit of seconds lost there... K, this is very unusual, around 41:00 through 45, when your running through the streets, you get this message which I cant read cause it's too fast, at first I thought you were picking up Healing bottles but now, Might be either a glitch or some other thing happening, Am quite interested in knowing what that detail is, up till now, everything is clean and quick. Note: Ok, you got the message slow near 45:50, (area too dark to read the map) The game probably does that on its own. D#5(51:00): Those Punks blocked the door, Smack em. They just stole seconds from your time. D#6(57:30): very minor turn error there costed about 1 second. !#1(58:20): Now NOW, I liked that, looked as if you were tired of them getting in your way ! And the kick :D.
From 58mins to the end has no super minor errors ;).

Conclusion:
-Excelent item response/use
-very good Control (Just a few errors with the enemies blocking the route or making quick turns around corners)
-Excelent Boss Battles very very Clean except for the Pyramid Head x2 Bosses at the end, which doesn't seem to be a very easy task but very well performed, the rest is Excelent.
-Excelent memorisation/planning except for a few minor mistakes like the staircase, but you knew you had to go upstairs :).
-You had the right amount of items at the limit.
-Excelent Puzzle Solving
Overall: Very Clean Run with minor mistakes that can be easily repaired.

Personal Tips:
- You might want to count your ammo, even though it takes time to go in your inventory to reload, count your shots so that you know when you are empty, thus wasting time for that "click" Sound.
- When going around Corners, Take your time, you do it very well, but the times you turn too quickly and end up hitting the wall.
- You had just the right amount of ammo, but like you did one monster with the shotty, next time one gets in your face and blocks your time, you shoot it rather than waste 4 or 5 seconds (theres a part where you got hit and stayed there for about 5 seconds back in the 1st Hotel)

To me, this was very good, even though those errors took maybe ... 30 seconds away from what you could have gotten, I'm sure you can break... 55:00 or under. Excelent Run, unfortunate for the game's Darkness and So much Fog, I enjoyed this one very well. Excelent job.
