Wasn't better known.. She was beautiful, had a great voice and in some ways stole the show here, but she was cast as the annoyingly pretty kid. Had she been cast just a bit older instead of the proverbial "barely 18" things might have worked out better, but when air head is written into your lines it dooms it from the start not to mention the credits just list her as 'night club singer' with as many lines throughout the movie. They could have given her a name in the credits other than night club singer.

I was disappointed after a lively start, and with a very good cast, that I could understand maybe two-thirds of the snappy dialog in this character driven drama/comedy. Pat O'Brien (The Front Page, The World Gone Mad), playing the lead as a crusading attorney, was always a soft spoken, fast talking actor, but I had trouble understanding even his business partner, Broderick Crawford, among others. Maybe it's just me.
The movie stayed lively throughout. It had to. It's an off-the-shelf corruption story with a murder mystery plot serviced mostly by light comic scenes until the final act.
Ruth Terry was fine as the nightclub singer/pest/love interest, but there was no spark between her and O'Brien. Eve Arden (That Uncertain Feeling, Letter of Introduction) was good, as usual, here as O'Brien's sharp-tongued secretary. I wish her part had been bigger. Edward Arnold (Eyes in the Night ), Douglas Fowley (Arson Inc.), and Douglass Dumbrille did well in their roles. Willie Best (Dangerous Money, Road Show) had a small, less racist and humiliating comic part.
I downloaded the 1.1GB MPEG2 file. Video and audio quality were fine.

Movies must have been much more fun to make before computer effects...
There's a couple of scenes with Willie Best who's the Porter in the hotel where the main character lives. He practices his moon-walking techniques when not busy and the talent this guy has makes some contemporary entertainers look like the morons they really are. He gets some of the best lines, too.
It's a murder-comedy crafted on the style of the "Thin Man" and it's not as good, but that's pretty much chemistry and hard to duplicate.

I wasn't expecting much when I went into viewing this but I was presently surprised. A good tight plot with a few twists with plenty of humor.
All in all a nice little murder mystery packed with a few laughs. Not a bad way to spend an evening.
