Body Electric, a multimedia collaboration by three leading Bay Area experimental electronic musicians, received its U.S. Premiere at the Other Minds Music Festival in 1997 at San Francisco's Cowell Theater.
Laetitia Sonami, Pamela Z & Donald Swearingen perform live in tandem with 30 video monitors and super-projection screens programmed live by Japanese video artists Visual Brains with text by Melody Sumner.
Pamelz Z triggers electronic samples and distorts her operatic voice through her full-body, electrode-controlled BodySynth; Swearingen activates a grand piano by interrupting infrared beams with choreographed waves of snare drum sticks; and Sonami controls electronic sounds with an elbow-length "lady's glove" that is fitted with extremely sensitive pressure and motion sensors.
Commissioned by the American Embassy in Japan, Body Electric was first performed in the fall of 1996 in Tokyo, as part of the American Embassy's 13th annual Interlink Festival.
