Philippe 'Suzaku' HenrySonic the Hedgehog 2 (Gen) - Single-segment 0:24:23 - Philippe Henry (2005)

Single-segment speed run of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 done on December 26 2005. Available in 4 versions: low quality, normal quality, and 60fps high/insane quality.

Author's comments:
First off, thanks to the following.
-Radix, for the work he does on SDA and for convincing me to try this run again.
-Nate, for capturing the run and verifying it.
-Radioactive Jellyfish's cat, I wouldn't be doing this run without you.
-Mike89 for various strategies and help.
-Everyone at Sonic Center, for the movies, routes, maps and competition.
-Everyone at the SDA boards who gave me support.
-Tim Hurtz, he lent me Sonic 2 and helped me with random Sonic things.

I'm actually very surprised that I took this run upon myself, considering how much of an anti-Sonic gamer I was when I was a kid. As such, I have very little experience at playing Sonic games. In fact, I played Sonic Adventure for the first time September 2005. But, thanks to speedrunning, I have much more respect for the little blue hedgehog than before.

Under regular circumstances, Sonic 2 is not a difficult game. But speedrunning it presents many challenges, mostly from faulty programming. Most of my runs were stopped by things outside of my control, such as falling through random floors or being pushed into walls. Thankfully, I play this run with Sonic alone, as Tails always seems to get in my way at the worst possible times. Because of this decision, the Metropolis areas with the nuts and bolts are considerably slower.

Sadly, none of the times in this run are world records (though a few are painfully close). Also, some of the routes and strategies presented in this run are changed from those for world record times for safety issues, noticeably Oil Ocean 1, Wing Fortress, and Death Egg.

My thoughts on Metropolis 2? Admitedly, the second time I miss the bridge jump was purely my fault, but I still hold to the fact that if the damn bridge had appeared in the first place like it should have, I wouldn't have made the mistake.

Is this run good? Yes. Did this run take a lot of effort? Hell yes. Could it be improved? Could it ever. If someone who has experience playing Sonic games attempted a run on Sonic 2, the results would be a great improvement over my time. Will I try this run again soon? Maybe, maybe not. I hate the Metropolis 2 blemish on this run, and I know that I could improve on a lot of my times. But then again, this is the first time I've ever spent more than 10 minutes every couple years on a Sonic game, so maybe my running efforts should be put towards a game I have more skill, time and interest in.

This run is dedicated to Nathan Jahnke who so desperately wants more Sonic runs. Let Sonic 2006 begin.
