South Asian Community News #003: Gujarat Genocide (October 16, 2006)

Gujarat Genocide: 4 years later

In 2002, a clash between two groups at a train platform resulted in the burning of a train compartment which killed 59 people. There was no proof that this event was a terrorist attack but the event was used by the The Hindu Extremist ruling party to justify the murder of more than 1000 Muslims in villages in Gujurat.

Today's program features audio from a recent presentation by Indian journalist Dionne Bunsha titled 'Living in a State of Terror: The Gujarat genocide, four years later'. We also spoke with Ms. Bunsha about her recent book on the gujarat violence. Also, we go to an archive radio report produced back in November of 2002 by Free Speech Radio News' correspondent Miranda Kennedy in New Delhi. This report looks at the role of US corporations in funding the Hindu Right.

DIONNE BUNSHA is an correspondent with the Indian magazine Frontline. She has won the Sanskriti Award and the People’s Union for Civil Liberties Human Rights Award for her reporting on the Gujarat genocide. She is the author of the book 'Scarred: Experiments with Violence in Gujarat.'

FREE SPEECH RADIO NEWS is a daily half-hour progressive radio newscast. You can listen to their reports on-line at www.fsrn.org.
