Speyer's setting of Müller's poem (op. 42, No. 2) appeared first in Germany in December 1842 (in: Orpheum. Album für Gesang mit Pianoforte, No. 11, pp. 24-5). Singer Johann Baptist Pischek (1814-1873) performed and popularized this song in England since 1845. This is one of the many English editions.
