"The Challenging Tide" A Rehearsed Reading at London's Theatro Technis, http://www.theatrotechnis.com by Stavros Lillitos directed by George Eugeniou
UK world premiere of a play written in English by Greek Cypriot writer Stavros Lillitos (1919-1972) which depicts a family's experience during the 1930’s Metaxas dictatorship, through the German occupation of World War II and the Civil War which followed. The audience experience a somewhat more recent Greek Tragedy.
The Challenging Tide follows the development of a single family, witnessing the suffering of the Greek people through this epic tale. It deals with subjects like idealism and betrayal, the arrest of some at the behest of others, and of a family's collective recourse to murder. The family is torn asunder unable to find comfort from either Church or State.
Lillitos questions man’s relationship with himself and the world around him while highlighting the hypocrisy of “might is right”.
Additional notes: Written by Stavros Lillitos, in English, when he was aged 33
