The origin of the name “Goff” is Welsh. A “Gof” is a smith.

This is a true story which took place September 4, 2006, a few blocks from my home in Lawrence, Kansas.

2 "Ei Bod Fy Darfelydd"

4 "Way Too Soon"
lyrics and music by Charles Rice Goff III
After my visit to the southeast USA in 2006, I became fixated somewhat on C & W music. I wrote the musical introduction to this song when I was seventeen, but never recorded it with anything. The basic melody for the rest of the song came to me in a dream, like so many works I’ve recorded over the years.
C. Goff III: acoustic guitar, slide guitar, voices, ukulele, arrangement, and production.
5 "I Am The Law"
lyrics by Martijn Benders
music by Charles Rice Goff III
I was asked by my friend Justynn Tyme of “Dada Yow” to make interpretations of a couple of Martijn Benders poems for an upcoming Dada Yow broadcast. Because one of these poems used rhyming couplets, I saw it as an excellent opportunity to compose some rhythmic music using a hurdy gurdy which I’d recently acquired from my long time friend Eric Rowland in California (thanks Eric). The synthesizer-ish breaks between the verses were created with manipulations of a “Groove Card”, a one-of-a-kind homemade instrument created and given to me by Bret Hart when I visited him in 2006 (thanks Bret).
C. Goff III: hurdy gurdy, voices, Hello Kitty Stratocaster electric guitar, groove card, percussion, arranging, and production.
6 "The Old Lady Of Life"
lyrics and music by Eric Matchett
When Eric visited Lawrence in April of 2007, not only did we have us a marathon Turkey Makes Me Sleepy reunion recording session with our Turkey brother, Mike Adams, but Eric also recorded the basic elements of a Country/Folk song that he had written, with the intention that I add some embellishments to it and release it to the public in some form later on. It turned out to be the first piece completed for this album and helped to set the album’s themes in some ways.
Eric Matchett: acoustic guitars, lead voices
C. Goff III: ukulele, jews harp, high-up background voices, arranging, and production.
7 "Quantrill"
lyrics and music by an unknown author, first published during the USA Civil War
Before the Union Vs. Confederate States Civil War, William Clarke Quantrill had served American society as a horse thief, slave stealer, murderer, and bible school teacher. During the war, he served as a terrorist guerrilla for the Confederacy in Missouri. In August, 1863, he led 450 Confederate raiders (including Frank and Jesse James) across the Missouri border into Kansas to spend the day murdering 150 men and boys in the city of Lawrence. Most of the buildings in Lawrence were burned to the ground during the attack on the town. The song recreated here is a tribute to Quantrill written by an admirer (name unknown) not long after the Lawrence raid.
C. Goff III: Reflector Stratocaster electric guitar, foot pedal guitar effects, voices, ukulele, arranging, and production, including manipulation of Tapegerm sonic loops created by Mental Anguish (Chris Phinney).
8 "Hyperglycemic & Radically Anemic"
lyrics and music by Charles Rice Goff III
One morning in the summer of 2007 I woke up from a particularly moving dream in which I was a witness to a performance of the late Laura Nyro. The genius herself called me to the stage in the dream and handed me a trinket made of purple beads that somehow reminded me of candy. I awoke and wrote this song, feeling somehow guided from beyond by one of my truest heroes.
C. Goff III: acoustic guitar, voices, talking drum, Reflector Stratocastor electric guitar, arranging, and production.
9 "The Old Maid’s Last Hope"
lyrics and music by E. S. Thilp, published in 1887
This old American folk ballad by E.S. Thilp reveals a few 19th Century conceptions of beauty, morality, health, and humor.
C. Goff III: acoustic guitar, voices, Midisoft midi composing tool, arranging, and production, including manipulation of Tapegerm sonic loops created by Contagion, GEMAfreie-welten, and The Majestic Twelve.
10 "Hurdy Gurdy Man"
lyrics and music by Donovan Leitch
After receiving a gift of a hurdy gurdy from my old friend Eric Rowland, I thought a bit about this 1960’s Donovan hit, but it was the serendipitous finding of a copy of the original songbook for the Hurdy Gurdy Man album at my favorite local music store (Richard’s) that led me to record the song. Donovan’s version doesn’t have a hurdy gurdy in it; mine does.
C. Goff III: hurdy gurdy, acoustic guitar, Hello Kitty Stratocaster electric guitar, bowed electric bass, voices, lyrics for third verse, arranging, and production.
11 "Chantey Dance In Dada Pants"
lyrics and music by Charles Rice Goff III
The main melodies of this piece were brought to me by forces beyond my understanding in a dream. At the time I thought it all had a sort of Simon and Garfunkel “Feelin’ Groovy” thing going on. As I began to work with these sounds in the conscious world, however, they took on the guises of weird old sailors, so I dressed them up in the sounds and words presented here.
C. Goff III: acoustic guitar, Reflector Stratocaster electric guitar, voices, arranging, and production, including manipulation of Tapegerm sonic loops created by Blind Mime, Dave Fuglewicz, Ed Drury, and International Garbage Man.
12 "The Hands Of The Clock"
lyrics and music by Charles Rice Goff III
I wrote this song soon after returning from my trip to the southeast USA in summer, 2006. I wanted to create something that would fit snuggly into Nashville.
C. Goff III: acoustic guitar, Hello Kitty Stratocaster electric guitar, voices, drum machine, arranging, and production.
