Subject: Sondheim Source
This is the source for Stephen Sondheim's musical by the same name. The stage production was a huge success, and justly so.
This original is tightly plotted, adequately acted by the standards of the day, and in its way suspenseful. Sondheim kept all the basic plot points, deepened and expanded the characters and wrote some of his best songs.
The contemporary movie, based on the Sondheim show, got lousy reviews.
This movie is fascinating as the fore-runner of one of the best musicals ever written.

Subject: Wish all the films were this good
Excellent story. I wish there had been a good MPEG2 version of this film. No whiz bang effects or such, but if a story is well written and well acted, it will always beat GCI and special effects.

Subject: Don't lump all old films in with ones like this...
Agreed. -- With the thick part. Besides which, kids need to understand that this isn't a mainstream movie like The 39 Steps or Fury, films from the same period which still hold up well if you work with them even a little. It's a shoestring budget film produced solely as a vehicle for an outré genre favorite. This is closer to a George Zucco PRC cheapie than something like Bride of Frankenstein.

Good stuff.
And the recent film is based off the musical, that's why they are singing. Some people are really thick...

Subject: No End to Movie...
OK movie, but nothing like watching it all and getting to a good fight scene, then it stops and has no ending. Either upload failed or editor did!

Subject: Has all the elements
Action movies moved a lot slower 70 years ago; a little too slow.
But at least they weren't singing.
