Joan KenleyPersonal Journeys for Global Change (April 21, 2007)

Featuring James O’Dea and Van Jones

Program Description
When thinking about how personal journeys can affect change, it’s interesting to reflect that “the world we are experiencing today is the result of our collective consciousness . . . and if we want a new world, each of us must start taking responsibility for helping to create it.” You’ll hear an inspiring conversation with two visionary leaders who have devoted their lives to personal transformation and social change. Some of the topics we’ll explore include:
➢ the journeys that led O’Dea and Jones to the important work they’re doing now
➢ what steps guarantee an economic win-win for creating “green collar jobs”
➢ why personal consciousness and social healing are necessary for true global change
➢ how the IONS Shift-in Action program reaches many to encourage societal transformation
➢ Van’s role in Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s initiative to create a Clean Energy Jobs Bill and Green Technology Job Centers

James O’Dea is President of the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) located in Northern California, dedicated to research and education into the frontiers of human consciousness. Additionally, James co-leads a dialogue series called "Compassionate and Social Healing”, which brings together leaders and activists for human rights, peace, and social reconciliation. O’Dea previously served as the Executive Director for the SEVA Foundation, and Director of the Washington DC office of Amnesty International, where he testified before Congress and served as a representative to the State Department, the White House, and the World Conference on Human Rights. He brings to his work a sense of urgency, as well as an Irish sense of humor, and love of language. www.noetic.org www.shiftinaction.com

Van Jones is Founder and President of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in Oakland, CA, which promotes alternatives to violence and incarceration. He is also an eco-visionary, civil rights attorney, and public speaker, Van is working to integrate solutions to America’s two biggest problems: social inequality and environmental destruction. He serves on the Board of many leading-edge organizations involved in improving community health and promoting responsible business. Van envisions a national "green-collar jobs" initiative that will create a green pathway out of poverty and diversify the coalitions fighting global warming. He is a 1993 Yale Law graduate, husband and proud father. www.ellabakercenter.org
