In June of 2006, Charles Rice Goff III visited several experimental sound artists in North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee. Later that year, Taped Rugs Productions released a set of seven CDR recordings and one DVD video which documented Goff’s interactions during the tour. This archive presents the materials from the sixth disk in the set.
Goff left Florida and Hal McGee on June 20th to spend a few days recreating and researching in Nashville, Tennessee. Jack Engard served as a generous host and tour guide while Goff soaked up bits of the considerable history and musical atmosphere in the city. While Goff did not record any new music of his own on this leg of his tour, he did document some of his activities for the Taped Rugs 06 06 Tour DVD.
On June 23rd, Goff departed Nashville on a bus trip across the state to Memphis, where he was greeted by Chris Phinney (of Mental Anguish and Harsh Reality fame). Phinney served as host and local sightseeing guide for the final days of the Taped Rugs 06 06 Tour. The evening that Goff arrived marked the date of the first of several improvisation sessions recorded in Phinney's tiny but functional music studio. Phinney recorded all the sessions with an analog four-track tape recorder. Over the course of three days, eight recordings of about 23 minutes each in length were created (two per C90 cassette tape). Phinney mixed the tapes into four final compositions for release to the public in the weeks after Goff departed Memphis.
The full battery of instrumentation, tapes, and other noise-makers that Goff brought with him on the tour combined with Phinney's collection of synthesizers, guitars, radios, and other devices to provide the two sound artists with a virtual orchestra from which to compose their improvisations. Each of the four final compositions has a unique sonic quality.
Here the entire contents of Tennessee, Disk One are presented, containing the first set of Phinney's mixes as well as a humorous bit of Southern home cooking that Goff captured on his microcassette recorder:
