Chris EdwardsUnited for Peace, Defending our Liberty - Tariq Ali speaks Out (2005)

Manchester, UK. 8th September 2005. A public meeting takes place in the Town Hall on the question of uniting for peace and defending liberty in the aftermath of the London bombings on 7/7.

The event is organised by Greater Manchester Coalition to Stop the War, Greater Manchester & District Campaign for Nuclear Disarmamment (CND) and the Muslim Association of Britain (Manchester Branch). The platform speakers are:

* Tariq Ali: veteran campaigner and writer
* John Rees: Stop the War Coalition
* Rae Street: CND
* Micheal Meacher MP
* Sondes Malik: Muslim Association of Britain

Over 300 people attend the event. The main purpose of the rally is to build support for an important anti-war demonstration on the 24th September in London.

This clip shows Tariq Ali speaking at the event. He was a nationally known leader of the anti-Vietnam war movement in Britain in his youth and is now active in the anti-Iraq war movement.

The following is the blurb from a leaflet publicising the 24th September demonstration:

PEACE &
LIBERTY
24 SEPT 2005

College Green, London. March to Hyde Park for rally.
Called by Stop the War Coalition, Muslim Association of Britain and CND.

STOP THE BOMBINGS - STOP THE WAR

Bush & Blair's 'War on Terror' has made the world a more dangerous place. 85 percent of the British people believe that there is a link between the London bombings and the Iraq conflict. This link is acknowledged by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre and the Chatham House think tank.

DEFEND THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY

We reject the view that terrorism is rooted in Muslim fanaticism. It is no more real than saying that George Bush is following a 'Christian fundamentalist' foreign policy. Blair's talk of an 'evil ideology' will create a backlash against Muslims. Attacks on Muslims have already increased by 600 percent. It must be said loud and clear: neither Muslims nor Islam are the problem. Terrorism is rooted in real problems here on Earth.

DEFEND CIVIL LIBERTIES

Terrorist organisations can kill and maim but they cannot take away our civil liberties, only our own government can do that. Blair says that he is concerned to 'defend our way of life' but his proposals will take away fundamental freedoms. One innocent man has already paid with his life
for 'increased police powers'. If these new measures go through, more injustice will be visited on us all.

BRING THE TROOPS HOME BY XMAS

We must redouble our campaign for the withdrawal of British troops from Iraq. We should do this, not only because of 7 July, but because it is right. It is right because of the 100,000 civilian deaths. Right because of the economic and social chaos after two years of occupation. Right because of
the torture and degradation of civilians carried out at Abu Ghraib and Camp Breadbasket. Right because the reasons given for the war have all been shown to be false. Right because the war was illegal, and the occupation is
an affront to international law. And right because of the 92 British soldiers killed, and the hundreds wounded.
