Classic tv. Part of the Singer Playhouse series which starred David Niven, Dick Powell, Charles Boyer and Ida Lupino. Classic 1950's t.v. series episode, "family oriented", features Niven as "The Deacon" a playwright who has spent many years researching "the play of the ages".
Synopsis: A downhearted Hollywood actor, fed up with his life, returns to his uncle's bar after many years. There he encounters "The Deacon" who, although poor, seems contented with life, his sole ambition to finish his play. Although he speaks of it constantly, he has never revealed the contents. This time, he divulges the play to the actor and the rest of the bar patrons.
This episode is a "play within a play". Niven as "The Deacon" wonderfully enacts his play in this Singer Playhouse episode. (the original file is mis-named as "The Gift-Christmas tv 1950s.mpg" Please use your computer function to rename to "theanswerclassictv1950s.mpg" or similar appropriate name.)

Subject: Great episode!
This show originally aired Dec 23, 1954 and I have taken to watching it every Christmas. Highly enjoyable and just as timely as the day it aired.

This production Company was sort of a TV United Artists, founded By David Niven, Charles Boyer, Dick Powell, and Ida Lapino.
Who took turn starring and producing. The also did a great series called the Rogues. Later it became just a production company, one of the last I recall of were Burkes Law and Honey West.
This episode also has a slew of well recognised character actors from the 50's and 60 that were in things from Superman to Star Trek.
Also one other major star Carolyn Jones, when she was still trying to be a blonde film star, as a Bronx bimbo sort, and before she lost the dye Job, married Aron Spelling, and became Gomez's temptrist and male kid fantasy Mortica Addams in the original Addams Family TV show.
Decently well written...and just a hoot for all the people in it.

I enjoyed the advertisement for Singer sewing machines, and then the show began, 25 minutes of a story of a bunch of guys, & one gal whose claim to fame doesn't seem to be be much but she's a cutey. Then questions begin from the characters & my interest stayed for the whole time. If you knew me, you would know why I adore the ending.

absolutely correct jazzfan, this is Four Star Playhouse which was sponsored by Singer.
I do hope the quality of this file is better the previously uploaded truncated version. As time permits, I hope to upload better quality versions of programs previously uploaded, and episodes not on archive.

This is part of the series FOUR STAR PLAYHOUSE. It was previously uploaded with the ending cut off. It is such poor quality that's it unwatchable. Who ever uploaded this one just changed the name to Singer Playhouse.

Now THIS is what we need more of on TV now.
I really enjoyed this. Good story, nicely put together, kept me completely interested the entire way through, and of course, David Niven, who I would pay good money just to watch him brush his teeth.
